Fearless Friday: ICU Nurses, What Are You Managing That No One Sees?

July 4th 2025

Dear ICU Nurse,

What are you managing that no one sees?

The alarms. The acid-base imbalances. The sweat pooling under PPE. The sixth sense it takes to keep someone alive when all you have is vitals, labs, and a prayer.

I began my career in the 4ICU at UCLA in Westwood, California—no ordinary intensive care unit. It was called Higher Level of Care, and that name wasn’t for show. It meant the entire interdisciplinary team pushed medicine to the edge. Every shift was a lesson in human suffering and divine strength.

Back then, we were experimenting with reduced HLA matching for lung transplants—trying to increase access to organs and improve survival rates in patients previously considered too high-risk. We didn’t just take care of patients—we stewarded protocols. We made decisions with consequences that shaped national policy and global data sets.

And we did it while comforting families, arguing pathology, explaining test results, and managing graft-versus-host disease—one of the most devastating syndromes you’ll ever witness.

But most people will never know what you hold.

They won’t know what it’s like to chart while a body seizes, or to explain death to a family while a physician walks away. They won’t know the silent calculations, the skipped meals, or the cortisol rush when your name is called in a code blue.

And on a day like today—July 4th, Independence Day—while the country celebrates freedom, I want to ask you something deeper:Have you forgotten what real independence looks like?

Have you been so wrapped up in the ways of the system—the scheduling, the paychecks, the fear of retaliation—that you’ve forgotten your Creator promised you something better? Something eternal?

Scripture doesn’t glorify burnout. It says, “Come out from among her.”

There’s a reason your body is breaking down. Your soul isn’t designed for this kind of abuse. You weren’t made to survive on caffeine and trauma. You were made to live boldly, speak truth, and be free.

And yet here you are—managing, surviving, showing up.

This Fearless Friday, let me remind you: there’s a way out. There is a nurse-led protocol built for those like you—those who are still working, but spiritually walking wounded.

In my Be Brave Book Bundle, I lay out the recovery plan—spiritual, legal, clinical, and practical—to take your soul and your license off the line and put your purpose back in your hands.

Let this Independence Day be the one where you don’t just clock in—you come out. Be Fearless this Friday ICU Nurses. What Are You Managing That No One Sees?

Your freedom doesn’t come from policy. It comes from the One who sees what you manage when no one else does.
