Power Move™ #8: Pray and Fast
Before You Make a Career Decision, Seek God's Direction
"Is not this the fast that I have chosen...?"— Isaiah 58:6 (KJV)
Prayer is communication.
Fasting is discipline.
Together, they are power tools.
When workplace stress, fear, injury, discrimination, or career burnout come for us, our natural instinct is to move.
We want relief.
We want answers.
We want the pain to stop.
But God often calls His people to do something different.
He calls them to seek Him first.
Career Burnout Competes for More Than Your Energy
Career burnout doesn't only affect your body.
It affects your attention.
Your confidence.
Your judgment.
Your hope.
And if left unaddressed, it can slowly weaken your relationship with God.
When employees become overwhelmed, they often spend more time researching employer policies than seeking God's direction.
They ask coworkers.
They ask family.
They ask social media.
They ask everyone except the One who knows the end from the beginning.
Prayer Before Decisions
Throughout Scripture, God's people prayed before making major decisions.
Prayer is more than asking God to fix a problem.
Prayer aligns our hearts with His will.
It reminds us that our Provider is not our employer.
Our security is not our paycheck.
Our future is not determined by one supervisor, one organization, or one difficult season.
Prayer teaches dependence on God.
Fasting Trains the Flesh
Fasting is often misunderstood as simply giving something up.
Biblically, fasting is an act of discipline and surrender.
It teaches us that every appetite should submit to God.
When fear is loud…
fast.
When anxiety is driving your decisions…
fast.
When you're tempted to react before you've sought wisdom…
fast.
Fasting doesn't manipulate God.
It changes us.
It quiets competing voices so we are better able to hear His.
Before You Decide
Before you resign...
Pray.
Before you request FMLA...
Pray.
Before you confront your manager...
Pray.
Before you accept another job...
Pray.
Before you let fear determine your future...
Pray and fast.
Career decisions made in panic often produce regret.
Career decisions made in God's presence produce peace.
