A Guide for Nurses on FMLA Leave

Most nurses don’t realize it until they’re on leave—but by the time you’re dealing with burnout, depression, or anxiety symptoms, it’s not just emotional. It’s institutional.

If you’re on FMLA right now, I’m not here to tell you to meditate and medicate.I’m here to help you see clearly, move wisely, and gather what you need to protect your purpose.

🧠 What Most Nurses Do (That Doesn’t Help)

When RNs feel targeted or mistreated, they often:

  • Vent to friends

  • Go to therapy

  • Call a lawyer

  • Shut down and internalize it

  • Say I'm gone wait of God (Without understanding what waiting on God looks like)

And while those things might offer relief, they don’t always offer resolution.

Because if you don’t collect the facts behind your feelings, you’ll leave your story in the hands of someone else’s documentation.

✅ What You Should Be Doing Instead (During FMLA)

Your time off is a God-ordained pause. Use it.

📂 Collect:

  • Your job description

  • Performance reviews

  • Written warnings

  • Policy manuals and HR language

  • Emails, notes, incident reports

🗣️ Ask directly:

“Are you treating me this way because I’m Black?”“Would this be your response if I were white?”“Is there a reason this keeps happening to me but not others?”

No, it’s not too bold. It’s clarity.Because if you won’t say it, the system will pretend it’s not there.

✝️ Don’t Let Discrimination Be Misdiagnosed as Depression

Being aware that you are being mistreated is not a mental illness. It’s a spiritual awakening.

Yes, racism is painful.Yes, retaliation is real. But that doesn’t mean you’re broken. It means your spirit is refusing to agree with injustice.

What most RNs do is accept a psychiatric label for their symptoms—and never get to address the actual cause. You don’t need meds first. You need truth. 🧾 Evidence vs. Emotion: How to Protect Your Career While You Heal ? Mental health services are an option. But why choose them as your first line of defense when you can choose God?
